One of the things that makes Gravenhurst so special is the way people show up for one another.
Behind the scenes, there is an incredible network of volunteers, charities, service clubs, churches, businesses, and community organizations working every day to support our friends and neighbours.
Sometimes it’s a hot meal or groceries.
It can be transportation to a medical appointment.
Someone who listens.
That generosity is part of who we are.
Gravenhurst Against Poverty (GAP)
Gravenhurst Against Poverty (GAP) has been serving our community’s most vulnerable residents and struggling working families for many years.
When I first started volunteering as a meal delivery driver, we delivered just over 300 meals each week.
Today, that number has grown to more than 700 meals every week, serving over 36,000 meals each year.
That tells us two things.
The need is growing.
And our community continues to respond.
Behind every meal is an extraordinary team of volunteers whose compassion, organization, and dedication make it all possible. Their logistics are remarkable, but it is their kindness that people remember most.

Volunteering Changes You
One of the greatest gifts of volunteering is that it changes your perspective.
I’ve delivered meals to people who simply needed someone to talk to.
I’ve had people break down in tears, sharing the struggles they were carrying alone.
Sometimes they weren’t just grateful for the groceries.
They were grateful that someone cared enough to knock on their door.
Moments like these remind us how important our frontline workers, social workers, healthcare professionals, and volunteers are. They can carry tremendous emotional weight while helping others through some of life’s most difficult circumstances.
Coldest Night of the Year
Each year, GAP partners with Coldest Night of the Year, a community fundraising walk that helps ensure these essential programs continue.
Every dollar raised stays in our community, supporting:
- nutritious meals
- wellness programs
- transportation assistance
- outreach services
- practical support for individuals and families facing difficult times
It has become one of Gravenhurst’s signature community events and a wonderful opportunity for people to come together in support of their neighbours.
If you’re looking for a meaningful way to give back, this is one of them.

We Are Stronger Together
One of the things I admire most is how organizations throughout Gravenhurst work together rather than separately.
They share volunteers.
They share ideas.
They share resources.
Most importantly, they share a common goal, helping people.
Among the many organizations making a difference are:
- Gravenhurst Salvation Army Family Services
- The Muskoka Community Foundation
- Children’s Foundation of Muskoka
- Ryde Community Co-operative (past President)
- Rotary Club of Gravenhurst
- Gravenhurst Lions Club
- Legacy for Alex (Board Member)
- Free Stuff for Daily Needs
- Muskoka Indigenous Friendship Centre (Member)
Each contributes in its own way.
Together, they create a remarkable network of care that reflects the very best of Gravenhurst.
My Perspective
I’ve always believed that the strength of a community is measured by how it cares for people when life becomes difficult.
Gravenhurst has a long tradition of neighbours helping neighbours.
It is one of the many reasons I love this community.
To everyone who gives their time, donates, volunteers, or simply lends a helping hand, thank you.
In service.
